Or do you live in sheltered accommodation or supported housing, and your personal resources are insufficient to pay the cost?

Since 1 January 2026, two new forms of assistance have been introduced to provide targeted support to elderly people on low incomes: Being on a low income is not a permanent situation: increased support is available to elderly people through various FNS benefits.

  • Supplement for elderly people (COMPA)

Financial assistance for seniors

With up to €2 400 per person per year, the new financial assistance for elderly people aims to provide practical support to elderly people on low incomes, and complements the existing cost-of-living allowance and energy allowance schemes.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible for this assistance if you meet at least the following conditions: How to apply?

  • You receive the cost-of-living allowance and/or energy allowance and;
  • You receive an old-age/survivor's pension and/or;
  • You are aged 65 or over.

The procedure for applying for this assistance is included in the application form for the cost-of-living allowance and/or energy allowance. Therefore, no additional steps are required to receive this assistance for people who have already applied for the cost-of-living allowance and/or energy allowance and who meet the conditions.

Supplement for seniors

The allowance is intended to help older people whose personal resources are insufficient to cover the costs of accommodation and services:

  • an approved accommodation facility for older people or
  • approved assisted living accommodation

The allowance covers:

  • the costs of accommodation,
  • care, and the provision of linen (bed linen, towels, washcloths),
  • the washing and labeling of personal laundry (except dry cleaning),
  • basic hygiene items (body, hair, face, hands, teeth, ears, nails),
  • a television, a telephone, and an internet connection with basic subscriptions.
